Coming in the first half of 2013, the following grant programs are scheduled to be released over the next several months. These provide funding for many public safety agency needs regarding law enforcement and emergency management technology and hardware, and present an excellent opportunity for VARs who are both experienced in Government solutions and VARs looking to break into the Government vertical market.
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program provides states and units of local governments with funding to support initiatives in law enforcement, court programs, corrections and community corrections, and technology improvement. It can fund several law enforcement solutions including electronic ticketing, mobile computing, interoperability, and evidence tracking. NOTE: Early planning with the state and local government for this grant is critical. The Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Program provides funding to states and units of local government to help improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science and medical examiner services. This grant program is typically used to eliminate backlogs in the analysis of forensic evidence, and fund equipment for forensic labs and medical examiner offices that improves the efficiency and accuracy of their services. Applications that provide asset tracking capabilities for forensic evidence could be funded under this program. Finally, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) typically releases several preparedness non-disaster grants each year during early Spring.
